gSubs is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose your platform below to get started.

Windows

Download the installer

Visit the gSubs releases page and download the latest .exe installer for Windows.The installer uses NSIS and is configured for per-machine installation.

Run the installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file to launch the installer.
Windows may show a SmartScreen warning since gSubs is open-source software. Click “More info” and then “Run anyway” to proceed.

Complete installation

Follow the installation wizard prompts. gSubs will be installed and automatically added to your Start menu.

Launch gSubs

Open gSubs from your Start menu or desktop shortcut. The app will check for updates on first launch.

macOS

Download the DMG

Visit the gSubs releases page and download the latest .dmg file for macOS.

Open the DMG

Double-click the downloaded .dmg file to mount the disk image.

Install the application

Drag the gSubs app icon to your Applications folder.

Launch gSubs

Open gSubs from your Applications folder or Launchpad.
On first launch, macOS may show a security warning. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy and click “Open Anyway” to allow gSubs to run.

Linux

gSubs supports multiple Linux distribution formats. Choose the format that works best for your system.

Download the AppImage

Visit the gSubs releases page and download the latest .AppImage file.

Make it executable

Open a terminal and navigate to your downloads directory, then run:
chmod +x gSubs-*.AppImage

Run gSubs

Double-click the AppImage file or run it from the terminal:
./gSubs-*.AppImage
AppImage is the most portable option and works on virtually any Linux distribution without installation.

Linux system requirements

  • Modern Linux distribution (kernel 3.10+)
  • 100 MB free disk space
  • Internet connection for subtitle downloads

Verify installation

Once installed, verify that gSubs is working correctly:
  1. Launch the application
  2. You should see the purple gradient interface with the gSubs logo
  3. The window should display a drag-and-drop zone and a search box
  4. Check the bottom right for the language selector (defaults to English)
On first launch, gSubs automatically checks for updates. This requires an internet connection.

Auto-updates

gSubs includes an auto-updater powered by electron-updater. When a new version is available:
  1. gSubs will automatically download the update in the background
  2. A notification will appear at the top of the window when the update is ready
  3. Click “Install Update” to quit and install the new version
  4. gSubs will restart with the latest version
You never need to manually download updates. gSubs handles everything automatically.

Troubleshooting

Windows: “Windows protected your PC” warning

This is a SmartScreen warning for unsigned applications. Click “More info” and then “Run anyway” to proceed with installation.

macOS: “gSubs can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”

Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, and click “Open Anyway” next to the gSubs warning message.

Linux: Permission denied when running AppImage

Make sure the AppImage file has execute permissions: 
chmod +x gSubs-*.AppImage
